Some years huge swarms of locusts would devour anything growing above the ground. The defence used by local farmers was to bury part of their harvest annually as insurance. The following year it was dug up and mixed with the new grain. This gave Bukharan grain a distinctly musty smell! When the Russians arrived they promised to solve the problem. They suggested digging a ditch near the breeding grounds of the locusts. When young, they are incapable of flight and during this period they should be pushed into the ditch and buried.

Sedentary societies are often less belligerent than mountain societies. They are richer and have more to lose through endless conflict. The history of the Tajiks, Uzbeks and Turkmen, in the north, is less violent than that of the Pashtuns and the others in the south. This is not saying much. All the clans and tribes are fiercely independent and find it impossible to ALL THE CLANS AND TRIBES ARE FIERCELY unite under a single INDEPENDENT AND FIND IT IMPOSSIBLE banner.
