The Battle of the Ironclads on March 9, 1862, is one of the great set piece stories of the Civil War. Both at the time and since, each side portrayed its champion in the role of David taking on Goliath. S. ) Historians since have emphasized the revolutionary character of the fight even though the real revolution in naval arms had been fully demonstrated the day before. The outcome of the fight is generally held to have been a draw because neither vessel seriously damaged the other and no one on either side was killed.

Worden conceived of his primary responsibility as protecting the Union wooden ships in the roadstead, especially the still-grounded Minnesota, and like a nautical sheepdog, he intended to impose the Monitor between the Virginia and the Minnesota. He also planned to get as close as possible to his foe before opening fire. Though the Monitor had only two guns to the Virginia’s 10, Worden had three important advantages: First, his guns were bigger. The Monitor had two 11-inch Dahlgrens while the largest gun on the Virginia was a 9-inch Dahlgren, though the Virginia also carried two 7-inch Brooke rifles, which, with their higher muzzle velocity, were also very dangerous.

Subsequently, however, he earned the disapproval, even the animosity, of his civilian masters. Eventually these were subdivided into the East and West Gulf Squadrons and the North and South Atlantic Squadrons.
